Not at all! Our Foundation 1 classes are designed for beginners. No previous dance experience is needed. We also have a special class exclusive to our studio called Groove & Flow that is created to get you move comfortable moving your body to music, so if you think you have 2 left feet, you are a little aprehensive about partnerwork... you could also start with this class first, it's a solo class, so it can be an easier start to you partner dance journey.

No. You’re welcome to come on your own or with a partner.

Absolutely! Many of our students come on their own, and it’s a great way to meet people.

Which class or level should I start with?
If you’re new to the style, Foundation 1 is the best place to start. If you have previous experience and aren’t sure where you fit, contact us and we’ll help you choose. Or if you feel you need extra help you cab start with Groove & Flow.

Classes

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely. No special dancewear is required.

Do I need dance shoes?
No. Clean, comfortable indoor shoes, or even socks that allow you to move and turn easily are perfect to get started. We recommend smooth and flexible soles so that you can roll your feet down and slide easily, but in Foundation 1 classes especially anything goes. At a higher level in certain styles like Salsa On1 you may want to start wearing heels for the ladies, but we do not recommend that at the beginning.

Do you rotate partners during class?
Yes, we generally rotate partners so everyone gets to dance and learn with different people.

Do I have to rotate partners?
No. Rotating is encouraged but never required, rotation helps to not get bad habits with your partner and it helps to become adaptable.

What dance styles do you teach?
Our regular program includes Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba and Tarraxo, along with special classes in musicality, groove, movement and more.

Can I take more than one dance style?
Absolutely! We encourage you to explore different styles and discover what you enjoy.

How do I know when I’m ready for the next level?
Ask your instructor! We’ll be happy to help you decide when you’re ready for the next challenge.

How do class passes work?
Choose the pass that best fits how often and what you want to dance, then use it to register for eligible classes.

Do I need to register in advance?
Advance registration is recommended, especially for classes with limited space, but drop-ins may be available.

What if I have to miss a class?
Check the conditions of your class or pass, or contact us if you’re unsure about your options. If you miss too many classes privates are recommended to catch-up.

Visiting The Third Beat

Where is the studio?
We’re located on Agricola Street in Halifax, with our entrance on West Street at 5687 West st, close to the Commons.

Is there parking nearby?
Yes. Street parking is available in the surrounding neighbourhood. Most of it is 2 hour parking and is free.

When should I arrive?
For your first visit, we recommend arriving about 10–15 minutes early so you have time to get settled.

Socials & Events

Can beginners attend your socials?
Definitely! Socials are a great way to practice, meet other dancers and become part of the community.

Do I need a partner for socials?
No. Come on your own, with friends or with a partner.

Do I have to take the class before the social?
No. When an event includes both a class and social, you can usually attend either or both.

What happens at a dance social?
We put on the music and dance! It’s an informal space to practice, connect, have fun and dance with different people. Traditionally in Latin dances like Salsa and Bachata we dance one song together and go to the next person. In African styles like Kizomba it's more common to dance 2-3 songs together or more, so don't be surprised to see partners switching less often. In all styles it is OK to ask each other to dance, both leads and follows. It's also become more and more normal to have women leads and Men following, so do not be surprised to see many permurations of partnerships, as the end of the day we are all humans and we come to have fun and dance.

Our Community

What kind of atmosphere can I expect at The Third Beat?
Warm, welcoming and relaxed. We want you to feel comfortable learning, experimenting, connecting and being yourself. You will see the instructors being knowlegeable but also friendly and approachable.

What if I’m nervous about coming alone?
That’s completely normal! Many people arrive alone for their first class. We’ll help you get settled and dancing. The first step is often the hardest, and we understand that, so we try our best to creat a positive atmosthere and to be welcoming to everyone.

Is The Third Beat only for experienced dancers?
Not at all. We welcome everyone from complete beginners to experienced dancers.

Is the focus on choreography or social dancing?
Our main focus is social dancing—learning the skills, connection, musicality and confidence to dance with different people. However we do have a performance team and possibiities of getting into performing, but we recommend you learn how to dance first, as you can't perform something you can't do.

Can I learn both leading and following?
Yes! We encourage dancers to explore the dance in the way that feels right for them. We have many students who start with one role and take the classes again as the other role. Learning both roles has many benefits, first, you can dance everysong at the social if you want to, second it works on different skills and helps make you a more well rounded dancer, third, you become a more empathic and attentive dancer as you understand what your partner is going through and lastly you it helps you better understand the dance and having a full picture of what is happening.

How can I become part of The Third Beat community?
Come dance with us! Take a class, join a social, attend a workshop or simply stop by and get to know us.
